WELCOME HOUSE: BANGKOK
The Welcome House in Bangkok provides daily meals, shelter and assistance to people with aids without financial capacity and no place to go, as they have been rejected by their families. All must be ambulatory and able to care for their own hygiene. Our 20-bed shelter provided housing last year for 180 persons. Many stay long periods to recover their health and return to independent living. In some cases, staff interventions with family’s enables the person with AIDS to return home. Others are referred to the Franciscan hospice for terminal care.
The Bangkok staff last year provided AIDS education for nearly 100,000 people, directly with education of migrant and student populations and indirectly by training volunteers. Our secondary school program is of particular interest: Entitled, "Friend for Friend," it deals with adolescent sexuality and peer pressure. Over 800 people utilized Welcome House’s counseling services last year.
Welcome house enjoys an excellent relationship with local social workers and government officials. The Thai government named it a "Model Project," as it is used in government training programs. The Bangkok shelter is our largest Welcome House program. It also provides the administrative center for NCCF&P.
Funding is received from MISIO,Germany, Maryknoll, the Thai Government and corporate and private donations.
